I can not get VA to show Mic any thing but mute

Are you saying the little red icon in the top right of the main screen is red?

That means that the Windows speech engine is reporting that no audio is coming into it.  You'll want to look at this thread first:  https://forum.voiceattack.com/smf/index.php?topic=63.0

From there, you'll want to look at the devices on your machine to make sure that there is a clean signal path going to the device specified in the thread above.  Again, there's something impeding audio from getting to the speech engine.

Sometimes it really is -  something to understand with the Windows speech engine is that speech is NOT something we normally do with Windows, so, sometimes the settings may get out of alignment over time and we wont even know it.  Once everything gets put back into place, the lights will come back on- but finding what's out of place is usually a chore (thanks, Windows!)
