Unable to Register due to Unhandled Exception
« on: August 17, 2018, 11:18:31 PM »
Hi, I've been using Voice Attack for quite awhile, but I built a new PC (with Windows 10, same as the last one), and I'm getting an Unhandled Exception when I try to register the new VA installation. When I search, unhandled exceptions are sprinkled through this forum, but not my particular error. When I google the error text, I get non-Voice Attack links, but none of the solutions have worked. I feel like it's probably something simple that will make me feel silly when I learn the solution.

Because I knew you'd enjoy it, I'm including the text of the exception. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Are you trying to run VA from a network drive or anything like that?

Are you trying to run VA from a network drive or anything like that?

That seemed to be a common cause in the forums I was reading, but nope, this is just a standard C: drive installation. Those forum posts led me to think it could be a permissions problem, so I tried running it as an administrator, but no dice.

Saw this on StackOverflow... you may have already been here:

I ran "netsh winsock reset" (as administrator) and reset the PC to solve this problem. It was happening when trying to install a winforms application - which worked fine on all the other PCs in the office.
A clue was that Chrome wasn't able to access the internet on this PC - and the solution to that fixed both problems.

This is going to be one of those, 'keep stabbing until the lights come on' kind of things.  I'm going to have to dig on that one, as that is a brand new one to me.

Something else to consider if this just does not work its way out is to migrate your registration over to a Steam key if you have a Steam account.  Looks like you've had VA for a long time, so you automatically qualify anyway ;)

I'm not giving up on you...  just wanted to let you know that you're not dead in the water.

Wow, tonight I learned that Voice Attack is on Steam! Well that's the answer, if you ask me. All the games I'm liable to use VA with (aka Elite Dangerous) are on Steam anyway. How do I transfer my license over?

I am curious about this problem, though. I hate to be stumped by this kind of thing. I saw that forum post you mention, but my internet and Chrome has been fine the whole time I've been on this Windows installation (about 4 months). And I felt it was a bit early in the game to be resetting the PC just for Voice Attack, no offense. ;)

Edit: Never mind, I found the instructions for converting to a Steam key. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah... I just don't know even where to begin with that type of exception, as the process that VA uses in that function (key validation) is absolutely dead simple.  This is the first time I've seen it in nine years of doing this (yikes... nine years o_O).  I can't just dismiss this as an anomaly, as you could be the first out of many to have a problem (like if Microsoft releases an update or Defender decides that VA is now a virus... yeah, that happened ugh).  So, I'll make sure to keep watch for others having the same problem.

Just in case there could be more going on, I'd suggest running a system file scan just to see if there's something that can be detected easily:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system
It's worth it to do this every now and then - not sure why that's not an automatic process.

I'll pop on over and migrate your key ;)

For those reading along later and need similar help, running a system file scan (sfc /scannow) fixed the issue:
