Yes, all 1.x branch updates are free if you own a license:

Aside from the profile database, which has a rolling backup(It keeps 9 backups of changes to the database, and the oldest is overwritten) , no.

I addition, while installers are available for most major versions, it is not guaranteed an old version of VoiceAttack will be able to read a profile database saved in a newer version.

You can manually back up your old database by copying the "VoiceAttack.dat" found under "%appdata%\VoiceAttack" to a safe location in case you need the old version later.

You can also click , click the "System / Advanced" tab, then click the "Click here to browse VoiceAttack's data folder." link to open the directory containing "VoiceAttack.dat". I'm not 100% sure this was available in v1.6.9 though.
