Key Press command not working in any program
« on: June 11, 2016, 06:01:16 AM »
Hi

I have searched and found a few threads regarding key presses not working. I have tried the things suggested but still having no joy.

I'm running Windows 10 and everything was working fine (mainly used with Elite Dangerous). I've not gamed for a month or so and now I've comeback to it VA doesn't want to play ball.

At the moment, starting from an empty profile and adding just one key press command, with Notepad set as the target. I can see the voice command recognised in VA and Notepad gets focus but no key press is received. Trying while Notepad already has focus also doesn't produces output..

Here is a list of things I have tried (re-testing as per paragraph above each time).

Run VA as admin
Turned of UAC
Tried with VA set to compatibility mode for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows XP
Tried the keypress command using both standard and directx methods.
Set VA back to default, deleted the AppData user directories, un-installed and re-installed VA and then re-entered the registration key on next run.
Repeated the above but still nothing worked.
I then disabled all start-up programs and rebooted.
There are no programs that I can see that would grab/monitor the keyboard other than VA but still not working.

At a bit of a loss because up until now VA has worked brilliantly. If anyone can suggest anything further to try would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Dave

Dave,
see my thread below re Elite; sounds like the same issue.
Windows 10, speech works fine, can't trap the keyboard.

For me upgrading to the latest Beta, and activating the "always-on-top" setting did the trick (even when VA is minimised to the systems tray). I have found no issues using the Beta version.

No idea why this would work as in theory (and to my limited knowledge) always-on-top is a window setting that has nothing to do with the processing of window messages in the O/S.
Still, it worked for me.

Hope this helps.

Are you running any applications like Synergy or TeamViewer or something that may be stealing focus?  I don't want to cause a panic, but I've even had one guy find a key logger that was intercepting input (this is just one isolated case, but it illustrates the countless things that can be going on in Windows).  You might want to look in your install history and see what has changed, because something has changed and if VA just decided to stop working in that regard (commands recognized, nothing happens).

Also, be CERTAIN you are running as an administrator, as that is a very common item to look out for.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the help guys. I finally fixed it. It was a service running in the background. I turned off half a dozen unimportant ones and the key presses started working... Not sure which one it was that did the trick but I shall make a mental note of this in case of future 'clashes'.

Cheers

Thanks for the update.  If you happen to figure out which service was blocking input, I would love to know about it, as I can add it to the watch list.

So key presses in the new 1.5.8 and also 1.5.8.28 Beta do not work for me in some screens.  But when i uninstall it and reinstall the 1.5.7 version it works perfectly.  the 2 places i know it doesn't work for me in Star Citizen Launcher window, i had it typing my login information.  Also in polboot.exe for FFXI, it does work in actual FFXI after the launcher loads it.

On another note the click doesn't work with the virtual keyboard in 1.5.8-1.5.8.28 but 1.5.7 does.

This could be a service i guess, but not sure why 1.5.7 works perfectly.

Note:
I did run as administrator and also tried different compatibles.

This could be your process targets.  I would look at each one of them to make sure they are pointing at the right items.

This can be changed from the main screen (global), the profile options screen (profile-level) and the command screen (command-level).

I just tried installing 1.5.8 again.  I didn't have any process target selected and it didn't work, next i tried the active windows selected and it didn't work, then i tried selecting the process that i wanted it to affect and it didn't work again.  All 3 appeared to do the same thing and not simulate keypresses.

my previous statement referred to StarCitizen launcher, i still not sure how to do this one.

But i went to test what you said with FFXI and managed to get it to work by chaining 3 commands together.  I had to use 1.5.8 because it had necessary functions to multibox for FFXI, such as targeting processes.

So half of my problems are basically fixed as of now.  Don't know how well 1.5.8 works inside of StarCitizen as i haven't tried it out yet.
