I've been running VoiceAttack (currently 1.7.8 ) for a couple months now, works great.  I booted my machine yesterday, and VA wasn't showing what I say in the window, like it normally does.  I also get a new message "Default audio recording device detected".  Also, the bar at the bottom is not lighting up at all.

At first I thought it may be because I exceeded 20 commands in a profile, so I paid to register, and then registered the software, but that didn't make a difference.

Windows Speech Recognition is set to the correct default device, and is able to detect the microphone.  Other applications are also able to use the microphone successfully.

No Windows Updates or applications have been installed since the last time VA was working.

I typically use VA in conjunction with OBS and VoiceMod, but for purposes of troubleshooting, neither were loaded.

I tried uninstalling VA, restarting, reinstalling, with the same result.  I also tried installed the beta version.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Make sure that in Options > Audio you do not have any devices being changed at startup.  That would mean making sure the four boxes with labels starting with, 'Set Windows Default (whatever) device' are not checked.

Also, on the, 'Recognition' tab, does the box at the bottom labeled, 'Windows Speech Recording Device' reflect what you are expecting the speech engine to use?

You'll next want to take a look at this thread:  https://forum.voiceattack.com/smf/index.php?topic=63.0  to see if that might help.

Next, you'll want to try this thread (ignore the title) as it has helped many mystery issues with the speech engine over the years:  https://forum.voiceattack.com/smf/index.php?topic=64.0

Finally, you'll want to look at this thread, as it outlines several different speech engine scenarios with help for each:  https://forum.voiceattack.com/smf/index.php?topic=1635.0

Hope that helps!

Gary - thanks - it was door #3: 'Disable Acoustic Echo Cancellation' did the trick.

Appreciate the quick turnaround - seriously though, on a Sunday?  That's customer service!

There are so many ways a speech engine can lose its way.  Most times it's not so clear - small system change here, small software install there.  It's hard to keep up with it all.  Glad you're up and running :)
