Updating from version 2.1.5 to 2.1.6
« on: May 10, 2025, 11:19:35 AM »
Maybe I missed it, but I cannot find any documentation on how to update VA.  I had the paid copy of version 1 originally; then updated to the paid copy of version 2.1.5 and registered it.  Has been working OK, but when I launch it now, it asks if I want to update to the latest version (2.1.6).  When I select "Yes," it takes me to the Downloads page and has RED arrows pointing to version 1.16, saying that is the version I must download.  Since I have version 2.1.5 and have a Registration Key for it, I should be downloading version 2.1.6...Yes/No?
When I download V 2.1.6 and Run it, it does not install it on my hard drive but allows me to enter my registration key.  And, after doing so, it opens version 2.1.6 (with my profiles), but the only version I see "installed" in my Programs Files is version 2.1.5 and when I launch from the shortcut, that is the version that appears (again asking if I want to update.

What am I doing wrong?  I can find not "How to Update" instructions in the documentation, online or on YouTube.  I feel like the village idiot since no one else seems to have experienced similar issues.

Rgr.  I can try that.  Are there any folders that are installed in other places by default besides the Program files that I should be concerned with?

Also, if I update again in future, is the correct procedure to just install over the old, or must you uninstall first?  I find it unusual that no documentation exists giving guidance.

Normally upgrading between versions of v2 should not require any special steps.

By default, the installer should have proposed the path of your existing installation for the upgrade.

However, given the behavior you're describing, what's likely happened is that you've made a second installation of VoiceAttack, alongside your existing installation.

Have you checked the path the installer is using?

Upgrades are performed by installing a new version over an existing one. Profiles and settings for VoiceAttack itself are not stored alongside the installation files, however settings and files for third-party addons may be.

Thanks Pfeil.  That all makes sense, but I double checked the path of my current installation of VA (2.1.5) and it is C Drive>Program Files>VoiceAttack.  No other copies exist, except the installer for V2.1.6 that I downloaded to Desktop.

Can I just DELETE the current installed folder (drag to the trash), then use the 2.1.6 installer I have on the desktop?  Would that work, or screw things up worse?

It's still puzzling why the suggestion to update when I launch 2.1.5 sends me to an update for version 1.15--->1.16.

I would use the uninstaller, by going into Settings > Apps > Installed apps first before deleting folders.  Delete folders only as a last resort.

When there is an update available, VA will take you to the Downloads page:  https://voiceattack.com/downloads

The top items are the ones you will need to look at - everything below the top items are for v1.

Rgr Gary.  If I use the uninstaller, won't it delete my profiles too; or can I save a copy of them to a separate file?  If so, where are they located?

No, the uninstaller will not delete profiles.

The simplest method for getting to the profile database (all profiles are stored in a single file), is the "Click here to browse VoiceAttack's data folder." link on the "System / Advanced" tab of the VoiceAttack options window.

Worked perfectly!  2.1.6 is now on the computer and profiles were undisturbed.

Thanks again to all who posted responses and helping me out.
