If the settings have been reset to default, that indicates that the file storing the settings was corrupted, and thus VoiceAttack had to create a new one in order to work at all.

There are no automatic backups of that file, as it's quite rare that corruption does occur, as that's normally only the case if it's being written to (writing to the settings file should usually only occur when a setting has actually been changed, or VoiceAttack is starting up or shutting down; even then it should only take a few milliseconds) at the exact moment the application is terminated unexpectedly (as would happen in a complete system crash).

If you'd like to make a manual backup once you have adjusted the settings to your liking, you can use the "Export Settings" button on the "System / Advanced" tab of the VoiceAttack options window to do so.
Note that your license information will not be included, and would need to be entered again regardless.

If you are experiencing your system crashing with any frequency, you'll want to make sure it's in fully working order. Doing so it outside the scope of VoiceAttack itself, but at minimum you could consider running the Windows Memory Diagnostic (which can be found by searching the Windows start menu for that application name).
