Check for Updates Failing
« on: May 08, 2022, 07:16:47 PM »
Launching VA, and it is set up to automatically check for updates. But the last time I started it up, I get the message "Unable to contact server." So I opened up  my browser and tried to go to your site, and the connection times out. On another computer (the one I'm posting this on) I can connect, log in and worK. Both computers are on the same router and both are hard-wired, not WiFi.

I have tried using both MS Edge and Firefox. I also use the gaming computer for MSFS2020 and DCS and have no problems connecting. I sent you 2 e-mails, ,including the complete VA report, if that helps.

If it's happening in other applications trying to connect to the same domain, but not on other computers, it could be a DNS caching issue.

Have you restarted your computer recently (using the "Restart" option in the start menu, not by shutting down and powering back on)?

Hi, Gary.  If VA cannot connect to VoiceAttack.com, and on the same computer you cannot connect to VoiceAttack.com using a browser (and everything works fine from another computer), then what Pfeil has indicated is correct.  Something else to check is for any firewall or internet security packages blocking access to VoiceAttack.com (less common than DNS caching problems, but still a possibility).  I'd also try doing a 'ping'/'tracert' to VoiceAttack.com to see where things are going, possibly followed up by an 'ipconfig /flushdns'.

Hoping a simple reboot helps ;)

PS - got your emails.

VA is the ONLY app that can't connect, on this computer. All other apps that run online work fine, i.e. MSFS2020, DCS, Steam, etc. I did a flushdns - didn't work. I cannot ping nor tracert voiceattack.com. I even turned off my Windows Defender, to no avail. What else could be blocking your domain?

Don't know if it matters, but my cable company just installed a new modem and switched to ipv6.

Hi, Gary.  Your browser, tracert and ping are also other apps - all still on the same computer that is having the connection problem.  MSFS2020, DCS, Steam, etc. are not connecting to VoiceAttack.com (at least I hope not).  That means something on your machine is blocking VoiceAttack.com, or you are not able to resolve the address of VoiceAttack.com on that computer.  As you had indicated, you have one machine that is not able to connect, and another machine that can.  I am running on ipv6 and am able to connect without issue (this includes the registration- and there are no reports of anyone else having issues with connecting.  A nifty tool to try (not just for VA, but for any site you may have trouble connecting to) is https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/voiceattack.com
or
https://shotsherpa.com/  (put voiceattack.com in the search bar)

When you ping VoiceAttack.com, what are the results?  If you get an attempt at IP address 192.185.7.212, that means that DNS is working.  If it does not resolve to that address, you have a DNS problem (that means that your DNS server is not able to xref VoiceAttack.com to that IP address).  If it does resolve to that address, but cannot connect, you've got something on your machine that is blocking access (internet security package, firewall).  Outside of that, there is basically nothing that can be done from the VoiceAttack.com side, as the site is working as expected/intended with no recent updates.  I'm not sure where to guide you next from the local machine side -  hoping another user may chime in with some useful tips to try out.

Another long shot, but perhaps there is an entry in your hosts file for VoiceAttack.com?

Fixed it! While troubleshooting connect speed issues, I noticed that my router firewall was on. And so I turned it off jus to see what would happen. VA is now connected again.

Thanks, guys!
