Help needed

Can someone help this 76 year old guy? I would like to be able to have VA select a specific heading or altitude (ie heading 070, altitude FL220) for my Rotate MD80. I have the datarefs, cmds for the aircraft. Also have LUA. Just can't figure out how to use LUA to do want I want. An example of a basic script would be helpful. I think I could take it from there!
I have Plane Command for XP, FS2Crew for FSX-se, and while they are great are somewhat limiting (arbitrary). I like the flexibility of VA if only I could figure out how to get it to do what I want. I have set up all the easy stuff in VA, gear. lights, flaps etc, but am stonewalled with heading/altitude.

The easiest way I know of to connect VoiceAttack to a flight simulator using datarefs is SPAD.neXt, which should allow you to set them with a plugin call.
